4-H Livestock Programs

The 4-H Youth Livestock program in North Carolina is full of many educational opportunities! Please check these out and call Jonathan Black, our Interim County Extension Director and Livestock Agent for more information!


What: NC Junior Beef Round-Up
When: May 30 - June 1
Where: NC State Fairgrounds, Raleigh
Who:  This event offers youth an opportunity to show heifers and steers, and cattle must be registered by May 15 to participate.  Additionally, we have a graphic design contest, photography contest, and skillathon contest that any kid can participate.  For more information regarding this event please visit our website.

What: NC State Fair Market Steer Check-In
When: May 5 - 17
Where:  Locations across North Carolina, please check our website for exact locations and times.
Who:  Any kid who plans to show a Market Steer at the NC State Fair MUST check-in at one of the designated points.  Please make sure to find the additional paperwork that must accompany your steer at registration on our website or the NCDA Livestock Division at http://www.ncagr.gov/markets/livestock/index.htm.

What : Beef BBQ Boot Camp
When: July 25, 2014
Where: NCSU Beef Educational Unit
Who:  This event is open to youth ages 14-18.  Youth will learn about Barbecue Meat Science 101, new cooking methods, food safety, nutrition, and current topics.  Please note this event is limited to the first 40 youth to register.  Registration forms can be found on our website.

What: Livestock Judging Clinic
When: June 26
Where: NCSU Beef Educational Unit
Who:  This event is open to youth ages 9-18 who like to learn more about livestock evaluation.  We will cover Swine, Sheep, Meat Goats, and Beef Cattle.  Experts in the field will be brought in to help discuss evaluation techniques and learn desirable traits to look for in livestock.  All experience levels are encouraged to participate.

What: Livestock Skillathon Clinic
When: June 27
Where: NCSU Beef Educational Unit
Who:  This event is open to youth ages 9-18 who would like to learn more about the livestock industry.  We will cover Swine, Sheep, Meat Goats, and Beef Cattle.  Youth will learn about all segments of the industry and have the opportunity to participate in hands on activities to learn about livestock.  All experience levels are encouraged to participate.

What: State 4-H Livestock Events
When: July 15 (Practice Classes) July 16 (Livestock Judging)  July 17 (Skillathon & Quiz Bowl)
Where : NCSU Beef Educational Unit
Who:  This is a competitive event for youth ages 9-18.  More information can be found on our website.

What:  Youth Beef Industry Tour
When: August 3 - 6, 2014
Where:  Meet in Raleigh and travel to farms across the State
Who:  Youth must currently be enrolled in High School (Grade 9-12, Age 14-19) or College (Age up to 21). These kids will learn about all facets of the Beef Industry and is a great opportunity to enhance their knowledge.  This is event is totally free to youth who apply and are accepted to participate.  This covers travel for the event, lodging, meals, and shirts for each day.  This event is sponsored in full by the NC Cattle Assessment.  More information will be posted on our website shortly.
