Teen Club meeting

Are you a 4-H member 13 years of age and older? If so, plan to join us on Saturday, March 28 here at NC Cooperative Extension, Randolph County Center and join in the fun as we establish a teen club. We will gather at 11:00 AM. Lunch will be provided and bowling will be enjoyed following the meeting. We are located at 112 W. Walker Avenue in Asheboro. Our offices are in the lower level of the Sandhills Mental Health Center.

Youth will decide on a club name, the day and time to meet and will make plans for election of club officers.

Human Race a Success

Thanks to all the Randolph County 4-H members who helped to raise money for 4-H programs during our HUMAN RACE fundraiser.

We collected over $800. Special thanks to Jody Terry and the rest of the 4-H / FCS Advisory Committee and Cooperative Extension Staff who helped in coordination of the soup luncheon, held in January that netted over $450 for the Human Race.

We use the dollars to support camp scholarships, teen retreat scholarships, 4-H Congress scholarships as well as scholarships for South East Dairy Youth Retreat, and so much more.

We get to keep 75% of what we raised. Way to go Randolph County!

2009 4-H Photography Contest

The theme for the 2009 4-H Photography Contest is: “4-H Centennial”

Pictures can include any images from events or celebrations related to the year’s centennial activities. Entries will we accepted through Tuesday, June 9, 2009. Winning entries will be displayed at 4-H Congress in July.

The purpose of this exhibition is to provide a showcase of 4-H members' photographic accomplishments. After Congress, the winning photos will be displayed at selected meetings and events throughout the year.

All entries for the 2009 contest must be postmarked NO LATER THAN June 9, 2009, and should be original images created from June 2008 to June 2009. Contest categories this year include our standard "4-H in Action" and "Nature's Beauty" categories, with a new category this year of "4-H Centennial." Each category will be divided into a Junior (Ages 9-12) and Senior (Ages 13-19) division.

We will continue to use an entry form with personal biographical data. This entry form must accompany each photo entered. In addition to assisting with the judging process, this information may be used by 4-H agents for news stories about their winning 4-H exhibitors. Copies will be made of the winning entries and all original materials will be returned by September 2009.

April - Month of the Military Child

The Operation: Military Kids program, 4-H and OMK's partnership are a valuable component to our youth, especially our military youth.

April is "Month of the Military Child" (MOMC) there are activities, promotions, recognitions, etc. that your counties can celebrate/observe "Month of Military Child". It is never too late to incorporate a program for these youth/children. To promote and assist in activities for MOMC, a web site has been created (by Connect and Join, Inc.) for those who are interested in participating. For your convenience, I have included the link for a helpful and educational tool for "Month of the Military Child".

Human Race Money Due

4-H members raising money for 4-H and participating in the Human Race walk next Saturday, March 21 are reminded that all money must be turned in by Wednesday, March 18.

Remember to join the Human Race Walk / Run on Saturday, March 21. Arrive at Memorial Park in Asheboro at 9:30. The event will kick-off at 10:00 AM and be followed by a hotdog lunch!

The event will end at 12:30 PM and your parents can pick you up at the park.

All money raised for 4-H will help offset costs for members to attend dairy youth retreat, 4-H camp, teen retreat, 4-H Congress and so much more.

REMEMBER all walkers and runners must have a signed consent form in order to participate next weekend. If you need a participation form, call us at 318-6000.

District Activity Day

Mark your calendar for Friday, June 19.

Randolph County 4-H members will travel to Caswell County and participate in District Activity Day.

The contest will be held at: Oakwood Elementary, 274 Oakwood Dr., Yanceyville, NC 27379

The agenda for the day:

9 - 10 - Registration
9:15 - Judges Orientation
10:15- Presentations Begin
12:00 - 1:30 - Lunch (on your own)
1:45 - Afternoons Awards Program

As you can see lunch is on our own this year, plan to pack a lunch and carry it with you, or stop at one of the many fast food restaurants within one block of the school.

Begin planning your presentation now. We will be registering youth for this contest in very early June, so don't delay, begin planning today.

Centennial Ice Cream Flavor Selected

The winner has been announced!

North Carolina 4-H is excited to announce the winning flavor in our North Carolina 4-H Centennial Ice Cream Cone-test!! With over 62 applicants, and over 2,300 votes, it came down to the top three counties.

The winning flavor is: 4-H Campfire Delight, submitted by Tyrrell County!! The flavor is one that Creamery director Gary Cartwright found very original...never before has the Creamery tried a graham cracker flavored base, and it does not disappoint! Tyrrell County selected a graham cracker flavored ice cream with chocolate chunks and a marshmallow swirl, and it was an overwhelming winner!

Randolph County 4-H will place an order for this ice-cream and will celebrate during our Report to the People event in May!
