It is time to begin registering teams for the North Carolina Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program (WHEP). The contest will be held on May 5, 2012, at Crowders Mountain State Park in Gaston County. The first place senior team will have the opportunity to represent North Carolina at the National WHEP Invitational in Texas.

Summer Ventures in Science and Math

Do you know someone who will be a rising Junior or Senior in High School? If so, we would like to announce Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics (SVSM). This is a cost-free, state-funded program for academically talented North Carolina residents who may pursue careers based in science and mathematics. The program brings rising juniors and seniors together in residential settings for intensive study.

Students will be placed in a four week session that, depending on campus site, will start and end between June 17 and August 4.

Aquatic Sciences Day Camp

Are you a sophomore or junior in High School, you may be interested in this Day Camp opportunity:

On Saturday, April 21st, 2012, the NC State University Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology Program will hold the third annual Aquatic Sciences Day Camp. On the agenda: A day of fun and learning for students to focus on activities and hands-on activities related to aquatic ecology, fisheries, aquaculture, and aquatic animal health.

The day camp is taught by NC State University professors and graduate students actively engaged in research and teaching. Participating students will be chosen among highly accomplished and motivated high school students with interests in aquatic ecology, fish biology, aquaculture, conservation biology, veterinary medicine, fisheries management, or related fields. The hands-on experiences and training that participants receive will help them identify career paths, make contacts in the scientific community, and build credentials for a future application to NC State.

Honor Club Application

4-H has a special opportunity for youth 16 years of age and older with three years of 4-H experience: North Carolina Honor Club.

The North Carolina 4-H Honor Club was organized in 1931 by Mr. L.R. Harrill as a way to develop a statewide 4-H service organization. Today, the NC 4-H Honor Club has almost 3000 members from across the state and nation.

Being a North Carolina 4-H Honor Club member is more than just an honor. It is the chance to give back to the 4-H program a small part of the knowledge and skills that the 4-H program helped to develop. Honor Club is looking for members who want to have this chance to contribute to the club's motto - Service.

Membership in the North Carolina 4-H Honor Club is bestowed upon those 4-H'ers who have exhibited outstanding 4-H citizenship and leadership throughout their 4-H career. An Honor Club member continues to provide leadership and service to the total 4-H program throughout life.

You must have completed three or more years of 4-H club work and shall be at least 16 years of age and not more than 20 years of age on January 1 of the year of application.
The total number of applicants inducted into the NC 4-H Honor Club shall be limited to .5% of the current enrollment of North Carolina 4-H members.
New inductees will be expected to pay life-time dues the year that they are inducted. Some county 4-H programs pay their member's dues.

Back to School Time

Summer is winding down and many families are faced with the BACK TO SCHOOL realities! Who are my teachers?; What time do I have to get up in the morning?; What will I eat for lunch?; How will I get to school?; These questions and similar others will be discussed in many homes in the days before school begins!

The first day of school is usually one of excitement and anticipation! Parents and students have been back to school shopping for all the necessary school supplies and new clothes that allow students to feel dressed and ready for success!

If your student will take the bus, remind them of the following rules, shared with us by the American Academy of Pediatrics:
* wait for the bus to stop before approaching it from the curb
* do not move around the bus
* check to see that no other traffic is coming before crossing
* make sure to always remain in clear view of the bus driver

If, instead, your child is riding in a car, remember the following:
* all passengers should wear a seat belt and age appropriate car safety seat if needed
* all children under 13 years of age should ride in the rear seat of vehicles
* do not allow teen drivers to drive while eating, drinking or talking on the cell phone, thus preventing driver distraction

If your child will bike to school:
* always wear a helmet, no matter how short the ride
* ride on the right, in the same direction as auto traffic
* use appropriate hand signals
* respect traffic lights and stop signs
* wear bright color clothing to increase visibility

If your child will walk to school:
* make sure your child’s route is a safe one, with well trained adult crossing guards at intersections.
* walk with a friend and don’t be distracted
* bright colored clothing will make your child more visible to drivers

While getting to school can be one hurdle, lunch time can be another one! Lunch time can be stressful for children unless they are prepared with a healthy nutritious lunch brought from home or enjoyed in the school cafeteria. Most schools send schedules of cafeteria menus home, so that children can decide whether to pack a lunch on the days when the main course is one they prefer not to eat.

Encourage your child to choose fresh fruit, low-fat dairy products, and water. Avoid soft drinks as most contain 10 teaspoons of sugar and 150 calories. Drinking just one soft drink a day increases a child’s risk of obesity by 60 percent.

Providing students with good, nutritious food will help students stay on track during the day and a healthy snack before doing homework is a good idea too!

Begin now to assist your child in developing good homework and study habits!
* find a place for students to study with some privacy
* set aside plenty of time for homework
* turn the TV off while completing homework
* be available to assist with questions your child might have about their homework, but don’t do their homework for them

Getting prepared for BACK TO SCHOOL can help alleviate any anxiety your child may have. Keep communication lines open with your child so that they can feel comfortable discussing with you, the fears or questions they may have about the new school year!

Jason Wright receives NC 4-H Young Alumni Award

As a young alumni, Jason is currently serving a two-year term as the President of the North Carolina Dairy Youth Foundation Board of Directors. Prior to that, he served as the Vice-President. Jason also serves on the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Purebred Dairy Cattle Association (NC PDCA) representing the Holstein breed and is an officer in the North Carolina Holstein Association.

Jason continues to "give back" to the 4-H Dairy Youth Program by coaching dairy judging, dairy quiz bowl, and dairy skillathon teams from Randolph County. His teams consistently win or place very high in the state contests.

As a club leader, Jason organizes club meetings, community service projects including trips to the nursing home, Favorite Food Show events, trips to the Vet School at NC State University; holds dairy quiz bowl judging practice and supports the 4-H youth involved in the turkey project as a few of his roles as a club leader.

Jason continues to MAKE THE BEST BETTER through his participation in Randolph County 4-H!

Application, Interview, Resume and Essay Contest

AIRE is an opportunity for older youth to prepare for filling out college applications, making a resume, and having job interviews.

AIRE also known as Application, Interview, Resume & Essay is a 4-step process by which youth are chosen to attend National events such as National Congress, National Conference, and International Leadership Conference.

Any youth ages 14-18 can participate. Age is determined by age as of January 1 of the current year. Youth are chosen from this program to attend National 4-H Congress, National 4-H Conference and International Leadership Conference. You must complete an application and submit a resume of no more than two pages. An essay of 500 words or less is also required. Essays can be on any topic that relates to you. Applications, Essay and Resume’s are due to the Extension Office by Wednesday, May 11th. The Interview portion of AIRE is conducted at NC 4-H Congress in Raleigh in July. 2011 Poultry Science Summer Institute

The summer institute is a four-day, four-night conference designed to broaden the high school student’s understanding of the educational disciplines, scholarship opportunities, careers and industries related to poultry science.

Any high school student (rising 11th and 12th graders) with an interest in the biological sciences or a career in the poultry industry may apply to attend. You must list as a reference a high school science teacher, counselor, County Extension agent, 4H leader or vocational agriculture instructor. We also request a brief personal statement of why you would like to attend.

Cost for the conference is only $50.00, which includes your lodging on campus, all meals, field trips, workshop materials, great goody bags and entertainment.

MAY 2 is the deadline to REGISTER!

Attendees will learn about the vast field that is Poultry Science as well as specific information on our Poultry Science Degree Program and areas such as:

New information regarding potential budget cuts to NC Cooperative Extension and Research has recently surfaced. This situation has the potential to be extremely detrimental to these organizations. North Carolina is among the states that has seen the greatest growth from 1960 through 2004 in agricultural output. Studies show that each dollar spent on public agricultural research returns $32 to society. Compared to their peers, youth engaged in 4-H: stay in school longer, have higher graduation rates, have higher college attendance and graduation, smoke less, have significantly lower rates of criminal conduct and arrests, and are more involved in their communities. Recent information from the NC General Assembly has not been favorable for the University or Cooperative Extension. Conversations for cuts are now in the range of 25 - 30%. For Extension a 30% reduction is over $13M which would require the closing of 300 - 400 positions.

South East Dairy Youth Retreat

Asheboro and Randolph County 4-H is proud to be hosting the 2011 Southeast Dairy Youth Retreat. Scheduled for July 11 - 14, 4-H members will participate in workshops including calf care and management; nutrition and feeds; artificial insemination and fun with dairy foods. Participants will also visit small herd farms, commercial and registered herd farms and see some conventional and organic herds. A field trip to see bottled milk, cheese and ice cream production is also planned.

Youth will also enjoy the NC Zoo and Wet & Wild Emerald Pointe water park.

Youth will stay at the Hampton Inn and travel to Providence Grove High School for workshops! Cost for this four day event is just $100.

The general Objectives for 4-H entertains are:

1. To provide an opportunity for 4-H'ers to demonstrate their creativity through the performing arts.
2. To develop poise and self-confidence before a group of their peers.
3. To provide an avenue through which local and state 4-H programs may broaden the 4-H image and acquaint the public with the creative skills possessed by 4-H members.

4-H Entertains offers youth the opportunity to explore their creative side through musical selections, dance routines, skits or more! If you are nervous about performing alone, talk to your 4-H club about working together and do a group skit!

Two performances will be selected to advance to District Activity Day on June 21 here in Asheboro.

Developing the confidence to be on stage or in front of an audience is a real skill! We will take registrations through April 5.

Introducing New Extension Agent

Hi!
My name is Barbara Linder, and I wanted to formally introduce myself to all of the 4-H families in Randolph County. My position is comprised of 50% Family Consumer Sciences (Child Nutrition), 35% Equine (Adult and 4-H Horse programs) and 15% 4-H Afterschool. I am very excited to be working with the 4-H Equine Program here in Randolph County, and throughout the North Central District.
I have been a lifelong equestrian, and began riding officially at the age of 7. I grew up competing on the hunter 'C' and 'A' circuits, continuing throughout college. I also competed in AQHA shows during the early 1990s, finishing with multiple year end awards. During graduate school, I transitioned to three-day-eventing, and qualified for the 2004 American Eventing Championships. Also in 2004, I moved to Orlando Florida, where I served as the Orange County 4-H Agent. While in Florida, I showed jumpers in Tampa and Ocala. Now that I am back in North Carolina, I have retired my jumper and now have a budding career as a dressage rider with my 17.3 hand, and still growing, 3 year old Oldenburg, Remington VT! When I am not in the saddle, I enjoy spending time cooking, SCUBA diving, flying, and playing with my border collies Belle and Katie.
I am very excited to be a part of a wonderful 4-H team, and Cooperative Extension staff. I look forward to meeting you all!

4-H Camp for Military Families

Golden Corral® in partnership with North Carolina’s 4-H Youth Development and Operation: Military Kids programs are excited to announce Camp Corral for Summer 2011. Camp Corral is all-inclusive and is offered at no cost to children of wounded or disabled veterans (families responsible for transportation to and from camp).

Camp Corral is offered at Millstone 4-H Camp located in Ellerbe, North Carolina. Three one-week camping sessions are being offered.

Camp Corral is a special experience that will create lifetime memories – a full week with friends who can relate, packed with non-stop fun and all the camping can-do’s they love.

The food will be evaluated by a judge. All youth will receive a ribbon for participation.

Did you know that the FAVORITE FOOD SHOW is one of the most exciting programs that 4-H members participate in here in Randolph County. Everyone loves to try out new recipes, and 4-H members who participate in the FAVORITE FOOD SHOW do the following:

1. Select a recipe of a food item they would like to make

2. Type up the recipe for inclusion in our cookbook of recipes

3. Practice preparing the food item at home (remember practice makes perfect)

4. Register your food item recipe by filling out the following forms;

Junior 4-H Camp Planned

Are you someone who loves to go to CAMP? Well Randolph County 4-H is already planning Junior 4-H Camp for 2011.

Randolph County 4-H will take a group of youth to Betsy Jeff Penn 4-H Camp in Reidsville, NC July 3 - 8, 2011.

Cost to attend camp is just $300. Youth do not have to belong to 4-H to go to camp with us. Youth 8 - 14 years of age are eligible to attend.

While at camp, youth will hike, swim, complete art projects, horseback ride, meet new friends and learn about the out of doors as a great learning lab!

If you would like to camp with us, send a $75 nonrefundable
deposit to Randolph County 4-H, 112 W. Walker Avenue Asheboro, NC 27203. We will mail you all the camp forms necessary to enjoy a week of camp!

4-H Record Books

4-H Members in Randolph County are reminded that 4-H recordbooks will be due in December. Each year, 4-H members are encouraged to keep notes about their 4-H projects. The notes can be fashioned into a record book that tells the story about a great 4-H year! Jody Terry and I will assist any club members needing help in compiling the record.

The best part of records is that many former 4-H members have discussed how their records have assisted them as they completed 4-H scholarships, applied for application into college and applied for work! The completed record book details a members projects, citizenship, leadership and community service work. All of these items are valuable to future employment and school opportunities.

Hungry To Help

We’ve all heard the old adage, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Well, it’s true – nutritious food is good medicine. Food is one of our most basic needs. Along with oxygen, water, and shelter, it is necessary for human survival. In a nation as affluent as the United States, no child should go hungry. Yet everyday hunger disrupts the lives of 1 in 5 children in North Carolina.

Hunger is a problem hiding “in plain sight” in North Carolina. Whether it involves skipping meals, eating less than is needed to live a healthy life, or making do with foods that are filling but not nutritious, hunger’s effects can be devastating, especially among our more vulnerable citizens, including children and older adults.

According to an analysis by Feeding America, a hunger relief organization with which the food banks are affiliated, North Carolina ranks as the second-worst state in the nation when it comes to children under 5 lacking regular access to nutritious food and as 10th-worst for children of all ages.

In May 2009, Feeding America released the results of its first analysis of food insecurity in early childhood, “Child Food Insecurity in the United States: 2005 - 2007.” North Carolina ranked second worst in the nation with 24.1 percent of its children under 5 judged to be food insecure and lacking regular access to nutritional food. The state was 10th worst in the same Feeding America study of food insecurity in children 0-18 years old. Both studies used figures from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Nationally, the food insecurity average is 17 percent for children under 5.

To combat hunger the NC 4-H Youth Development program and the Food Banks of North Carolina, all of which are affiliates of Feeding AmericaTM our nation’s largest hunger-relief organization, have teamed up to promote awareness of hunger in North Carolina and to make an impact in local communities through a new hunger awareness initiative entitled “Hungry to Help.”

According to Dr. Marshall Stewart, State 4-H Leader, “Exciting plans are underway to prepare 4-H’ers, 4-H volunteers and alumni to host a variety of hunger awareness programs, can food drives (virtual and real) and sponsor hunger related volunteer efforts in their local communities. Extension offices across the state will become “drop-off” locations for can food collections and the entire Extension family is gearing up to prepare participants to be citizen leaders for hunger relief.”

Randolph County held a canned food drive during National 4-H Week and is conducting another drive at our Farm City Week Event on Tuesday, November 16. If you should like to assist, bring your food items to our 4-H office, 112 W. Walker Avenue, Asheboro.

4-H is a community of six million young people across America learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. North Carolina Cooperative Extension at North Carolina State University and North Carolina A&T State University conducts the 4-H program. More than 240,926 young people between the ages of 5 and 19 participate in North Carolina 4-H programs each year with the help of 21,221 adult and youth volunteers.

Super Sharp Shooting Stars ACHIEVE at State Shooting Contest!

Congratulations to the entire Super Sharp Shooting Stars 4-H club for their participation in the 4-H shooting sports competition held at Millstone Camp September 25.

Blair Faulkner competed in the senior division and scored second overall in the Rifle O class competition! Hayden Thomas tied for 4th in the junior division Rifle competition.

The Senior 4-H team finished seventh out of 21 teams competing in Archery and they finished ninth out of 27 teams in Rifle.

The Juniors finished seventh overall in Archery and seventh overall in Rifle!

This was the second year the Super Sharp Shooting Stars competed in the Rifle competition at the state meet! It was the first year that they competed in the Archery division.

Junior team members included: Hayden Thomas, Jacob Longuillo, Carson Minor, Mitchell Clapp, and Noah Kennedy

Senior team members included: Blair Faulkner, Brandon Allen, Drew DeForge, Kimmi Faircloth, and Addie Ward

Reminder to all 4-H members, our 4-H Youth Fair is this Saturday beginning at 9:00 AM at the Randolph Mall. Each 4-H member can bring up to five items for judging! The judge will award each item a ribbon and all projects will remain on display until 2:00PM.

In addition we will also be collecting food for our HUNGRY TO HELP campaign. 4-H is collecting food to be distributed to our local food pantries! One in five NC youth is food insecure, and 4-H is "HUNGRY TO HELP"

All 4-H members will sit with a 4-H judge and talk about your exhibits. Judges will evaluate each project and award a ribbon! The judges will ask you about how you designed your project, what you enjoyed about it, what you would do differently last time and they will be interested in knowing if you reached your goal!

The judges will also select the projects that will represent Randolph County 4-H at the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh in October.

All projects will remain on display at the Mall until 2:00 PM.

4-H will be collecting food at the Mall on September 18. The food is collected to help replenish the supplies at our local food pantries.
